Artistic Statement

An interdisciplinary exploration of the human condition

Kalina (b. 1998) is a Bulgarian multimedia performance artist currently based in London. She is interested in the human mind-body dualism, the place of the soul in this entity and the essence of alternative states of consciousness. She explores the ways, in which our bodies communicate with technology and sound, creating entirely new language systems that rely on sensations and abstract emotional responses. Her fascination with the merge of experimental electronic music and visual projection has a great influence on her work and research into the potential of unspoken communication. Her developing practice experiments with philosophical concepts of existence and their manifestations through movement, film and text.
Kalina’s most recent projects include: ‘W e t’ – a collaborative movement exploration of water as a natural material, and its connection to pleasure, as an intimate internal experience; ‘ApoKalipse’ – a collaborative video performance; ‘Martenitsa’; ‘Truth Remains’ – a meta-artwork, combining poetry, photography and graffiti art; '21 Grams of Dark Matter' - a live performance, combining movement, projection and sound. Her latest project, conducted within the Digital Theatre Plus platform, is an educational package of Mike Alfreds’ directorial methodology, presented via his version of Chekhov’s play ‘Three Sisters’, in which she undertook the role of a student editorial advisor.
Kalina is a photographer, performance artist, dancer, video artist, writer and aspiring theatre and film director and maker of A/V performances. Her explorations take whatever form suits the idea behind the piece best and her process of creation is experimental, often involving collaboration and devising.
Kalina is currently in her second year of the BA(TP) Performance Arts course at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating class of 2020.

Contemporary Pagan

Мартеница

This project was inspired by a workshop with Rachel Young at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. It celebrates the contemporary pagan, focusing on traditional Bulgarian customs that have survived trough time despite the influence of Orthodox Christianity. The symbolic exploration aims to capture the conflict between the two belief systems and their co-existence in modern times of technological distortion.

Light Pours out

Light is everywhere. It influences the way we feel and manipulates our thoughts. In this photography selection, I choose to play with light and manipulate it.

“Follow me, reader! Who told you that there is no true, faithful, eternal love in this world! May the liar's vile tongue be cut out! Follow me, my reader, and me alone, and I will show you such a love!”
